Bastila Shan is a fictional Jedi and Sith from the planet Talravin initially developed by BioWare for the role-playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and then further developed by Obsidian Entertainment for its sequel Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Bastila was a talented practitioner of battle mediation, which allowed her to boost the morale and combat proficiency of Republic and Sith forces.
Bastila was apart of a Jedi strike team that confronted Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Revan. During the confrontation, Revan's apprentice Darth Malak then used the opportunity to betray Darth Revan and usurp the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith. Malak had his own starship fire upon Revan's flagship, resulting in Revan receiving grave injuries.
Bastila used the Force to heal Revan's body, resulting in a Force bond forming between them, through which memories and emotions traveled form one to the other. The Jedi sought to exploit this bond in order to use the location of the Star Forge and destroy it, so they reprogrammed Revan's still damaged mind and assigned Revan and Bastila to the Republic Navy starship the Endor Spire, where Revan become the player's character.
During their quest for the Star Forge, Malak told Revan of his true identity and captured Bastila. Malak tortured Bastila and forced her into giving into her emotions and falling to the dark side of the Force. She came to believe that the Jedi were unfairly controlling and exploiting her joined the Sith as Malak's new apprentice.
Bastila would later confront Revan on the Rakatan world of Lehan. After Revan defeats Bastila in combat, Bastila attempts to persuade the Revan into reclaiming the Sith throne from the usurp Malak with her help. The player, as Rion of evan, has the option of accepting or declining Basila's proposal. If the player accepts, then Bastila defects to the player's side and devises a a strategy to simultaneously ensnare the Republic Navy and detract Malak's loyalists.
If the player declines, then Bastila flees back to the Star Forge and Malak's side, where the player would have to confront her a second time. It is during this second confrontation that the player has the option of turning Bastila back to the dark light of the Force.
