Genubath's mother was the wife of Hadad the Edomite and the sister of the Pharaoh's queen consort Tahpenes. The Pharaoh gave Tahpenes' sister to Hadad as a wife. Tahpenes' sister gave birth to Genubath, and Tahpenes weaned Genubath in the Pharaoh's house. Genubath was then raised in the Pharaoh's house.
When Hadad learned of of deaths of King David of Israel and David's commander Joab, Hadad asked the Pharaoh for permission to return to Edom and fight the Israelites. Hadad was one of the adversaries God rose up to punish Solomon for turning from Him and to idolatry.
